Functions and tasks of Services of national metrology infrastructure The Law on Metrology was adopted on 9 July 1996.
The State Metrology Service (SMS) is a governmental institution. Under the Decision of the Government of Lithuania No. 321 passed on 21 March 1998, it is responsible for the implementation of metrology policy in Lithuania, coordination of traceability of measurements, organisation and execution of scientific, legal and administrative activities in metrology field.
According to the Resolution of the Government of Lithuania No. 518 of 1997 "On the approval, keeping and use of national measurement standards, and approval of the list of national measurement standards and national standards laboratories, authorised to develop and keep national standards", development of national measurement standards is being performed in line with the above mentioned Resolution as well as the needs and economical opportunities of Lithuania.
Verification and calibration of measuring instruments and standards is performed by State companies - Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai and Panevezys Metrology Centres (MCs), as well as the other accredited laboratories, authorised to perform verification of measuring instruments by the State Metrology Service.
The Lithuanian Metrology Inspectorate was established according to the Law on Metrology.
Technical committee 'Metrology' is attached to the Lithuanian Standards Board. Its main responsibility is drafting written standards in metrology field.
Institute of Metrology is a research and education unit at the Kaunas Technology University.
